چکیده

In recent years, limitations linked to traditional urban drainage schemes have been pointed out and new approaches were developed introducing more natural methods for retaining and/or disposing of stormwater. Such practices include infiltration and storage tanks in order to reduce the peak flow and retain part of the polluting components. The impact of such practices on stormwater quantity and quality is not easily assessable because of the complexity of physical and chemical processes involved. In such cases, integrated urban drainage models may play a relevant role providing tools for long term analysis of infiltration structures efficiency. In this study, the effect of the clogging phenomenon has been assessed by means of a long term modelling approach. In particular, a simplified conceptual modelling approach for the simulation of the infiltration trenches has been worked out. The analysis has been applied considering different soils as well as different design criteria. Particular care was addressed to the simulation of infiltration structures considering performance reduction due to clogging phenomena. On the basis of a long-term simulation of 6 years rain data, the performance as well as the effectiveness of an infiltration trench measure are assessed. The study confirmed the important role played by the clogging phenomenon on such infiltration structures.

Artificial recharge of groundwater: hydrogeology and engineering

Artificial recharge of groundwater is achieved by putting surface water in basins. furrows, ditches, or other facilities where it infiltrates into the soil and moves downward to recharge aquifers. Artificial recharge is increasingly used for shortor long-term underground storage. where it has several advantages over surface storage, and in water reuse. Artificial recharge requires permeable sur...

Available water of a ferrallitic soil along the Kossou Lakeside slope (Ivory Coast) as affected by soil texture

The neutron probe method for in situ measurement of field capacity was applied to ferrallitic soils on the Kossou Lakeside slope (Ivory coast). For better utilisation of the natural resources, a study was conducted to determine the influence of the lake on the availability of soil water to plants along the lakeside slope. Two methods, one gravimetric and the other neutronic, were used to evalua...

Wildfire mitigation strategies affect soil enzyme activity and soil organic carbon in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) forests

We quantified the effects of three wildfire hazard reduction treatments (prescribed fire, thinning from below, and the combination of fire and thinning), and passive management (control) on mineral soil organic C, and enzyme activity in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) forests on the Piedmont of South Carolina. Soil organic C was reduced by thinning, either alone or with prescribed fire, and this...

Effects of organic matter removal and soil compaction on fifth-year mineral soil carbon and nitrogen contents for sites across the United States and Canada1

This study describes the main treatment effects of organic matter removal and compaction and a split-plot effect of competition control on mineral soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools. Treatment effects on soil C and N pools are discussed for 19 sites across five locations (British Columbia, Northern Rocky Mountains, Pacific Southwest, and Atlantic and Gulf coasts) that are part of the Long-T...
